Rouen is is a capital of Upper Normandy. It was founded by the Romans. Rollo, the first duke of Normandy, was baptized at Rouen. After, it was hit during the Hundred Years War. On 30 May Joan of Arc was burned alive in place du Vieux-Marche. In 19th century, Claude Monet painted over 30 views of the Rouen cathedral.
Honfleur is a magnet for artist today as it has been since the 19th century, this picturesque maritime town is very pretty with its cobbled streets, half-timbered or slate-fronted houses. So there are no surprises that Claude Monet started his artist life in Honfleur.
